Mastering the Numbers Podcast with Joe Mallo

In this powerful Season 2 premiere of Mastering the Numbers, host Joe Mallo sits down with Kristi Horner, founder and executive director of Courage to Caregivers, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting unpaid family caregivers.

Kristi shares her deeply personal journey from caring for her younger brother through mental illness to launching a movement that now serves caregivers across the U.S. Through innovative peer support, group coaching, suicide prevention, and mindfulness programs, Courage to Caregivers is transforming how we approach caregiver well-being.

Together, Kristi and Joe explore why so many people don’t recognize themselves as caregivers, and why that mindset needs to change. They talk about the importance of self-care as an act of strength, not selfishness, and the challenges of launching and growing a nonprofit during a global pandemic. Kristi also reflects on how caregivers can build resilience, set boundaries, and find balance between personal and professional responsibilities. Finally, she shares the organization’s vision for preventing caregiver burnout and creating stronger, healthier communities.

That's a Hard NO Podcast with Heather Drago - Setting Boundaries as a Caregiver

That’s a Hard No is a podcast about saying no and setting boundaries – without feeling fear, guilt, or FOMO. Hosted by Heather Drago, a busy wife, mom, business owner, and cancer survivor, we talk about everything related to boundaries, and why it can feel so damn scary to set them. We meet all kinds of interesting people from different walks of life with various takes on the subject, and we look at what’s happening in our culture and how it all comes back, sometimes, to simply saying no. New episodes every Tuesday!

Kristi Horner is the Founder and Executive Director for Courage to Caregivers. She is a certified Family Peer Support Specialist and NAMI Ohio Trainer for this program. In 2014, she lost her brother to suicide. She had been one of her brother’s mental illness long-distance caregivers for four years. He lived with depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. As someone who supported someone she loved very much, living with mental illness, she knew there had to be a better way to support mental illness caregivers and the idea for Courage to Caregivers was born! Listen in as she discusses the struggles of caregiving, learning to prioritize yourself, and ways to avoid fatigue and burnout.
